You need fans on it. It will have to be cleaned again to get the smell out. Sorry. This happened to me also last year. Now I out fans all over the place! The heat will not help! you need fans

LOOKY HERE!!! I have been cleaning carpets for 20 years and in my experience the installer gentleman was the closest! You need to have the carpet cleaning company come back over and redo the job right! I own several extractors and we always make sure the carpets and upholstery are done right or your next cleaning is a freebie! If the carpet were not gotten too wet then the padding should not have absorbed any water. A professional carpet extractor will make sure they are using the proper equipment and all should be dry within a 12 hour period.If not something isn't right about the guy cleaning it.He obviously wasn't certified and trained properly.

What do you need to make bacteria grow?…Answer – A warm moist environment. Odor causing bacteria, Mold and mildew will grow anytime these conditions are present. Try using a Quat Disinfectant in the carpet solution next time to prevent the growth.

If it has only been a few days it is a musty smell you are smelling from the water not mould.
First thing you have to do is dry the carpet. I am going to assume you do not have professional equipment for this.
1/ You will need to turn up the heat, which you did.
2/ Set up a dehumidifier if you have one.
3/ Set up fans to blow on to the carpet. If you can rent carpet blower it would be better. This may take a couple days to dry.
4/ When to carpet is dry you should not be able to smell it.

I install Carpets/Flooring for a living… unfortunately… the problem you have is that your carpet pad has gotten wet… extremely wet… it will take a considerable amount of time to dry… (the pad gets very little air in comparison to the carpet.. and even if the carpet drys… stepping on the carpet will squeeze water back up from the pad and re-wet the carpet)… Anything short of rolling the carpet up to let the pad dry… you’re just going to have to let it dry on its own… You may try renting blowing equipment or Carpet Cleaners from a rental store (as they will try to suck up the water) sometimes even a Shop-Vac will help…
the smell will probably be a problem from now on… although it will not be as pungent or strong… sometimes it will get to the point where you will not be able to smell it at all… though you can try to use aftermarket powders and things to use on the surface of the carpet to help alleviate the smell…

As for me being "in the closet"… I’ve replaced many many rooms of carpet because of carpet cleaning… and what effects it has… An experienced Carpet Cleaner wouldn’t have gotten the pad wet… but if you’re still wet 48 hours later.. it’s NOT the carpet… it’s the pad…

Maybe your area has high humidity? The smell WILL go away after it drys, but it really shouldn’t smell after being cleaned!

it is mildew. Turning up the heat helps, but a dehumidifier and a "carpet blower" (available at your local rental center) will do the trick. I had the same problem once. The carpets smelled better before I cleaned them!

Why does my carpet and upholstery smell bad 48 hours after cleaning?
The carpet cleaning guy told me the carpet would dry within 4 to 6 hours of cleaning it. We left the house and turned the heater up full blast for 7 hours and when we got back it wasn’t dry yet. That was 48 hours ago and the carpet is still damp and the smell is nauseating. Why is it still wet, and more importantly, how can we get it dried out???? Thanks in advance!!
